For the first six years I owned my house, I experienced no trouble with this heater. About three months ago, the pilot light started going out intermittently. Service was performed and the intake and burner assembly was cleaned, with the assumption that it was a ventilation problem. After no problems for a few months, the pilot started going out again. This appeared to be a new issue, the pilot would go out specifically after each burner cycle. I was advised that it was likely an issue with the gas regulator, and given the cost to order parts and the age of the unit I elected to replace with a new unit. I know 12 years is a good run for this type of water heater, but it was frustrating that repair for such a simple issue was so expensive.

The old water heater was a Whirlpool that was a little more than 11 years old. The gas valve had malfunctioned and was overheating the water to a scalding hot temperature. Eventually the water heater would kick off all together and the pilot would have to be relit.
New AO Smith installed on this open system. Gas shutoff was replaced and installed above the flexible supply line for the gas.
Feedback by Customer
Chase provided me an accurate quote for a new water heater and installation over the phone, then arrived promptly the next day ready to install. He was very thorough and did a great job explaining the process with me as he worked. He completed the job in around two hours, and did an excellent job cleaning up afterwards. I have struggled to find reliable plumbing service in town that isn't interesting in upselling the customer at every turn, and I finally found a quality business in KC Water Heaters. Great pricing on services and installation and prompt and polite service.
