Old Description
Old water heater had a backdrafting flue. The rust on top of the picture is a sign that the water heater had been backdrafting. In this case, the installation was partially responsible for the backdrafting water heater. This house also had an attic fan which will also cause a water heater to backdraft.
New Description
Barely enough room to install a thermal expansion tank behind the full port ball valve. You should always replace old valves with brass free fittings.
